Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Tirzepatide? Tirzepatide is a class of drug known as dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. By targeting both receptors, Tirzepatide enhances insulin secretion and reduces glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, contributing to improved glycemic control.

In addition to its glucose-lowering effects, Tirzepatide has been associated with significant weight loss in clinical trials. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with type 2 diabetes, as weight management is a crucial aspect of overall diabetes care. Like other newer diabetes medications, Tirzepatide has undergone cardiovascular outcomes trials. These trials assess the impact of the medication on cardiovascular events, providing valuable information on the safety and potential cardiovascular benefits of the drug.

This therapy is designed not only for glycemic control in diabetes but also for weight loss in individuals both with or without diabetes.

How does Tirzepatide work for weight loss? Tirzepatide works by using the synergistic action of GIP and GLP-1 to regulate appetite and glucose levels in the body. It stimulates insulin production in response to elevated glucose levels, reduces glucagon secretion (which helps decrease blood sugar levels), and slows down gastric emptying, which creates a feeling of fullness and helps reduce hunger.

It works for weight loss by helping individuals eat fewer calories and better manage their body weight. Its dual mechanism of action makes it a great option for those wanting sustainable weight loss and improved metabolic health.

How is it different than Semaglutide? It acts on more receptors, often resulting in significantly more weight lost.

How long does it take for Tirzepatide to take effect? Tirzepatide begins to work soon after the first dose, but it may take several weeks to see the full effects on blood sugar control and weight loss. Individual responses may vary, and it’s important to follow the prescribed treatment plan and regularly check in with your medical provider to ensure you get the most out of your program.

What are the common side effects associated with using Tirzepatide?
Possible side effects vary from person to person. Everyone responds to medicines differently. Common side effects are most apparent during the initial stages of treatment. These side effects may gradually diminish over time. The common side effects of Tirzepatide are:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Indigestion

  • Stomach pain

  • Constipation

Are there any significant health risks associated with using Tirzepatide? Yes. Tirzepatide may cause rare side effects, including:

  • Prolonged vomiting. Patients on Tirzepatide can develop gastroparesis where the stomach stops moving, and patients vomit considerably. This can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Stop using Tirzepatide and call your healthcare provider right away if you have vomiting that persists more than a day.

  • Inflammation of your pancreas (pancreatitis). Stop using Tirzepatide and call your healthcare provider right away if you have severe pain in your stomach area (abdomen) that will not go away, with or without vomiting. You may feel the pain from your abdomen to your back.

  • Gall bladder problems. Gall bladder problems have happened in some people who take Tirzepatide. Tell your health care provider right away if you get symptoms which may include: pain in your upper stomach (abdomen), fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), or clay-colored stools.

  • Possible thyroid tumors, including cancer. Tell your health care provider if you get a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath.

  • Changes in vision. Tell your healthcare provider if you have changes in vision during treatment with Tirzepatide.

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Your risk for getting low blood sugar may be higher if you use Tirzepatide with another medicine that can cause low blood sugar, such as a sulfonylurea or insulin. Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar may include dizziness or lightheadedness, blurred vision, anxiety, irritability or mood changes, sweating, slurred speech, hunger, confusion or drowsiness, shakiness, weakness, headache, fast heartbeat, and feeling jittery.

  • Kidney problems (kidney failure). In people who have kidney problems, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may cause a loss of fluids (dehydration), which may cause kidney problems to get worse. It is important for you to drink fluids to help reduce your chance of dehydration.

  • Serious allergic reactions. Stop using Tirzepatide and get medical help right away if you have any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat; problems breathing or swallowing; severe rash, hives, or itching; fainting or feeling dizzy; or very rapid heartbeat.

Do not use Tirzepatide if:

  • you or any of your family have ever had Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) or if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2 (MEN 2)

  • you are allergic to Tirzepatide

Before using Tirzepatide, tell your health care provider if you have any other medical conditions, including if you:

  • have or have had problems with your pancreas or kidneys

  • have a history of diabetic retinopathy

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or breastfeed. It is not known if Tirzepatide will harm your unborn baby or passes into your breast milk. You should stop using Tirzepatide 2 months before you plan to become pregnant

Things to keep in mind when you are on tirzepatide:

Alcohol: Limit how much alcohol you're drinking. Alcohol can influence your blood sugar and there is a risk that it may drop too low in combination with Tirzepatide, especially if you are a diabetic and or drinking on an empty stomach. Alcohol may irritate your stomach and worsen GI side effects when in combination with the medication.

Medications: Make sure your provider is aware of all medications you are taking before starting Tirzepatide. Tirzepatide slows down gastric emptying which could potentially impact the amount of oral medication absorbed by the body. Although clinical trials haven't shown this to be significant with Tirzepatide in particular, it is best to use caution when taking any oral medication.
